he name has changed but the continuation of great horse racing goes on at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino in far Southern New Mexico... just across the river from El Paso, Texas.
Once the premiere horse race in the region, the Winstar Derby has evolved and grown to become the Sunland Derby.
The Sunland Derby is a 1 and 1/8 mile run at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

Kelly Leak, a California‐based Runaway Groom colt ridden by Roswell native Mike Smith, won the Sunland Derby
The 13‐race program was headlined by the $900,000 Sunland Derby for 3‐year‐old Thoroughbreds and drew 16,388 fans.
A total of $2,690,130 was wagered on Sunland’s live card, the largest handle in the track’s 50‐year.
