Upper Valley Farmers Get Ready for Winter Crops.

C otton may still be king... albeit a waning monarch of the valley... but, some farmers like to diversify and plant a winter crop on land that may have had cotton a year ago or perhaps alfalfa. It is a good cash crop and gives the soil a bit of extra organic material when the field is disked and the lettuce roots and leaves that are not trucked out are incorporated back into the soil.

As seen in the photo this lettuce crop was planted in August and probably received some rain which helped it grow quickly and will be harvested soon. The green leaves of the pecan trees seen in the background indicate that it is not November yet.

Other winter crops include: cabbage, onions and spinach.
