The sudden decision by Sunland Park Mayor Reuben Segura to not seek reelection has made the 2008 election a heated affair in the little bedroom community of Sunland Park, NM.

Without giving a reason other than saying that he is considering some other options... Segura has left the door open for a new administration. And some say that this may leave the door open for the Camino Real Landfill to quiet discontent about the "dompe" that residents have been clamoring about for two decades.

Seeking Segura's seat is City Councilman Juan Fuentes who along with Municipal Judge Martin Resendez (seen below) attended a debate recently held at the Desertview Elementary School.

Some of the residents were indicating that they thought that the Camino Real Landfill operation was behind the candidacy of Resendez. "They gave him $10,000 to run his campaign" said one long time activist in Sunland Park.

One thing for sure, the crowd was split on both candidates. There were erruptions of loud clapping and cheers from the left side of the room for Resendez and the same from the right side of the room for Fuentes.
