In a political move that may send shock waves through the Upper Valley community of Sunland Park and the region as a whole; Sunland Park elected Municipal Judge Martin Resendez as their new mayor.

Incumbent Mayor Jesus Ruben Segura shocked the little bedroom community nestled under the morning shawdow of Mt. Cristo Rey by announcing that he would not seek reelection to a fourth term.

Resendez won over City Councilor Juan Fuentes by a landslide of nearly a 2-1 margin. Interestingly, both of the Democratic candidates running for the mayor's office in Segura's wake actually supported Segura's campaign in 1996 and were seen as political allies.

During a resent debate between Resendez and Fuentes held in Sunland Park on February 12, 2008 both candidates had their vocal supporters en masse. Rumors abounded that Judge Resendez had sold out to the Camino Real Landfill receiving as much as "$10,000" in campaign donations from Camino Real.
