The New Mexico State University Regents and Athlethic Director Dr. McKinley Boston decided to pull the plug on the latest version of one of the worst football programs in the country. Tuesday afternoon they fired Hal Mumme and bought out his last year as head coach.
Things looked promising for Mumme when the Aggies came into the Sun Bowl and won for the second straight year with another upset of the UTEP Miners. That game broke a 6-game losing streak as UTEP made it nine losing games in a row.
The Aggies did not build on that win as they lost seven straight games to finish the season 3-9. The last two defeats were by huge margins against both Boise State losing 49-0 at home and lost last weekend at Utah State 47-2. The Aggies ended up 1-7 in the Western Athletic Conference.
