T
he Homecoming Parade was a tough act to follow but Canutillo HS had more up their sleeves. While it may be tough to have a bonfire in the city, out in the country their is still a will and a way to inject another shot of school spirit into the Homecoming Festivities. With a great deal of enthusiasm, the students and residents flock to the open area just north of town for a second huge event that fits perfectly after the parade in a well orchestrated week of school spirit building fun.
Out near Vinton, Texas under the supervision of the Westway Fire Department, Canutillo High School brought frenzied fan fervor to a fevered pitch with a gigantic bonfire that was just plain fantastic.

On a bed of pallets that stands nearly 15-ft. high the boosters and supporters set up a paper mache image of the opposing teams mascot. Talk about a hot foot.
While the wood sits awaiting it's flaming destiny speeches were made, the CHS Marching Band played the school song and other upbeat arrangements and the CHS Cheerleaders performed some of their dance routines and cheers.
It doesn't take long for the tension to build to a fervorish peak as everyone knows what they came for... and everyone is very ready for the bonfire to be lit.
Then it is time for "Ignition"... the moment everyone has been waiting for and the focus is the huge pile of wood that will transform the night. Soon the visions of a magnificent fire that will consume the minds and imagination of everyone present becomes a reality.

The volunteer firemen from the WFD get the signal and it is time to light the bonfire. Using a kerosene burner to ignite lumber it takes a while for the flames to signal that all is "Go"... but, soon enough the flames begin to spread.
The Canutillo High School Seniors can barely contain their enthusiasm as this mini-solar event lights up the whole area. Then the Seniors link hands and begin to take their laps around the fire in their version of a Ring Dance as everyone else watches from a safer and cooler distance.

The pallets are now engulfed with flames and it doesn't take long to send flames 50-70 feet into the still valley night sky. It is hard to capture the gigantic proportions of the flames... but at its zenith the heat is very noticable and even uncomfortable if one is too close. Most of the fans play it safe and stay 40-50 yards away.
And as the students move away from the tremendous heat it's time to snap a few photos... "Wishing you were here?!?". Wow!!! What an event.
