The 10th ranked Texas Longhorns are coming to town to add some much hyped drama in the UTEP Miners' 2008 season home opener.
The Longhorns got off to a great start last week against Florida Atlantic with the offense running smoothly on all cylinders in a 52-10 victory. Texas QB Colt McCoy had a fabulous day passing with nearly perfect accuracy and a few droped balls. McCoy also ran for a TD.
This home opener blowout was part of the Longhorn's celebration of their newly competed nearly 100,000 seating capacity expansion of Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Longhorn defense bent but did not break and although the FA QB Drew Willy passed, with what looked like at will consistency sometimes; the defense made some great stops with a fumble recovery and pass interception to thwart FA's drives.
The Miners, on the other hand are fresh off of a disappointing season opener against SUNY at Buffalo. Hopefully they have learned many things about their newly installed defensive scheme. The good thing for Miner fans is that now, the Miners will probably not get surprised by McCoy. But, the question is what will the Texas rushing game do to a Miner defense that gave up twin 100-yard games to two Bulls' tailbacks.
A capacity crowd is expected with few tickets still available and the attention that UTEP and El Paso are receiving will revererate with recruiting and a boost to the local economy for a long time.
