T
his Fourth of July was again the birthday of our great country and the reminder that we are barely reaching adolescence as a nation.
One of the ways that people celebrate this grat event is to watch or launch fireworks throughout the day... and then prepare for some great viewing after sunset.
For many people here in the El Paso area, setting off fireworks is not
such an easy event. For, one thing it is illegal to set off fireworks within the city limits.
But, that wasn't always the case. Residents of Kern Place recall that they used to be able to light firecrackers and roman candles in the neighborhood. Some would make the effort to go out of the residential areas such as the arroyo on Robinson or go to Rim Road.
Still others recount going to a little stip of land next to the Rio Grande near what used to be Smelter Town on the west side of the river near Anapara, New Mexico and having full reign of the area and river to play with firecrackers to their hearts content. There they would throw firecrakers into the river and watch the spires of water shoot up into the air.
The Upper Valley is also a favorite place for the whole Westside to watch pyrotechnics and the El Paso Street Festival also highlights its musical acts with wonderful displays as well.
