ut, this night’s festivities almost had the life knocked out of it as the Miners were trailing throughout the game as Blazers (23-7, 11-5) who needed a win to jump off of the NCAA bubble and into the tournament gave the Miners and the sold-out home crowd at the Don Haskins Center fits from the opening whistle.
The Miners were down early in the game on their last game at home for the season... no CBI this year, Thank You very much... they were throwing up bricks. One Miner fan told Bob Stull, who must have been taking Rolaids throughout the first half, “It’s a case of the nerves... they’ll come back in the second half.
And roar back they did. The Miners got focused on defense instead of throwing up wild shots. And just as the shots in the first-half fell short a bit; now the shots were falling as UTEP put the clamps on the Blazers scoring, holding UAB to a hand-full of points and one basket in a ten-minute span.

But, a comeback victory is one thing. The Miners win over UAB was one for the ages... and they did it in style. Who could have scripted this game any better.
Slowly the Miners came from being down 32-22 at the midway point. Well, actually... they waited a bit to get going as the Blazers added to their half-time lead to go up 38-24 when UAB's Kenneth Cooper scored three minutes into the second half.
But, from that point on the Miners inched their way out of a 14-point hole to PAYDIRT! And Paydirt Pete couldn’t have been happier. UTEP tied the game just in tie to keep everyone in the “Don” from having a heart attack.
