C oronado is not taking an easy route to the Texas State Football Championship playoffs in 2010; but, in the end it may be the most efficacious. Coronado has schedule two tough non-district games to tune themselves up for the brutal 1-5A run.
Head banging all night by the tough Coronado "D" was the only thing that kept Americas running back Jack Fields in check... and out of the endzone.

The T-Birds began the year as they have since 2008 with a battle against now cross terrain rival Canutillo. That tussel pits the coaching of Brooks vs. Brooks. Pappy Don Brooks coaches Coronado and son Scott Brooks coaches Canutillo. Canutillo, no longer the little high school in the valley, has in recent years been right at the top of District 1-4A standing. The first year that they played Canutillo took it to Coronado at Jack Quarles Thunderbird Stadium behind the running of John de la Rosa. This year the T-Birds pulled off a tough fought 28-21 victory over the Eagles.

Then the Thunderbirds went on the road to play a tough Permian Basin team in Midland Lee without their star running back Sam Brown who burned everyone last year. Although the Rebels were picked to finish the season 6th in the realigned District 3-5A you can never count out an Odessa or Midland team because their district is so strong top to bottom.

The Lee Rebels had a lead late in the first half the never-say-die T-Birds would not relent and tied the game just before the half when Cole Freytag hit Adam Roberts for a 27-yard TD with just seconds on the clock before intermission. The T-Birds defense shut the Rebels down in the second half but could not continue the surge in overtime.
